Our Horses

Fiona

Gender: Filly
Year Foaled: 2017
Breed: Walking Horse cross
Currently Unavailable

This sleepy-eyed little princess, named Fiona, just joined the Racer Placer's family January 30th, 2017. She was born to a mare (Emerald) who we rescued from the kill pen last fall who, at the time, had a colt (Finn) by her side (imagine a Momma and her baby being shipped to slaughter). Little did we know that Mom was already bred back. Isn't she pretty?

Hyper Visor/ Bear

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 2014
Breed: Standardbred
Height: 16hh

Racer Placers latest arrival in April of 2017 is Hyper Visor, aka Bear. He is shown here at our last driving clinic where he behaved beautifully. He is polite, quiet and content to jog, nicely demonstrating that harness racing horses can also become lovely pleasure driving horses. We are taking it slow and easy since he is still a very young horse.

Do Me Bliss

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 2006
Breed: Standardbred
Height: 15.3hh

ADOPTION PENDING

Do Me Bliss is a big, beautiful 11 yr old Standardbred gelding. Bliss is sweet, willing and ready to find his forever home. He has some trail experience, and responds beautifully to a light touch.

Allie

Gender: Mare
Year Foaled: 1998
Breed: Hackney Pony
Height: 12.3hh

Allie is an 18 year old Amish pony. Her usefulness to them had ended and she was sent to slaughter. We, at Racer Placers, saw something much different. We saw a seasoned pony who will safely take the kids for a ride and quietly pull a cart. She has so much to give and is patiently waiting to become a part of someone's family!

Hip Shaken' Mama

Gender: Mare
Year Foaled: 2011
Breed: Standardbred
Height: 14.2hh

Hip Shaken' Mama is a petite mare nicknamed "Spark Plug'. The perfect size for a smaller rider, she was unable to compete with the larger, longer legged harness racing horses. Her owner realized she might be better suited as a saddle horse or a pleasure driving horse. She has basic ground manners, was driven while on the track and is now being saddle trained at Acclaim Performance Horses in Jefferson, WI.

Mare with foal (Finn)

Finn has been adopted

Gender: Mare
Year Foaled: 2002
Breed: Paint
Height: 15hh

Gender: Colt
Year Foaled: 2016
Breed: Walking Horse cross

We couldn't leave mom and baby in the feedlot. They are coming to Racer Placers for their second chance at a happy ending. More info to come as we get to know them.

RESCUED #001: The auction company says "Chestnut pinto mare with filly, 14 years old an 15 hh. Mom is halter broke and leads well. She was broke to ride before becoming a brood mare, and with an experienced rider she could be brought back to work. This is a good opportunity to have a baby on the ground without going through the breeding process".

Update: Please don't breed your horse unless you are financially capable of providing for their care or re homing them responsibly. This sweet mare and foal, rescued from slaughter, are shown arriving in Wisconsin. If you look closely, you can see that she has already quickly grabbed a mouthful of grass as she exited the trailer! Plenty more of that for you precious girl...you have been rescued!

P.S. Her vet check after arriving revealed Momma is carrying another foal. Please donate (any amount is appreciated) to help us continue to save the horses...and their babies too!

Ebony

ADOPTED

Gender: Mare
Year Foaled: 2006
Breed: Standardbred
Size: 15hh
Sanctuary Horse

Violet is likely a farm bred Standardbred who, for whatever reason, found herself in the kill pens in the east. She will recuperate in a foster home with her best friend, Dahlia, where they will receive the love and attention they need to heal both body and soul. Please remember that donations are always appreciated to help us care for our horses.

Captain

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 2001
Breed: Standardbred
Height: 15.3hh

Rescued from a kill pen last spring, this fellow came with only a hip tag number—no name.  So, we call him Captain.  He is about the sweetest horse you have ever seen.  We know nothing of his past, only that his last owner decided to send him to a sale where he was likely to go to a slaughter buyer.   His left front ankle was broken long ago, so his usefulness is limited.  However, we have found him to be a happy, healthy, sensible, horse.  His ground manners are without reproach.  He gets along with other horses and seems to have a calming influence on them.  We believe he long ago paid his dues to humankind, and we plan to see that he enjoys the rest of his days.

Amish Mafia/Espresso Moco

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 2002
Breed: Standardbred
Height: 15.3hh

It is a shame that more Standardbred horses, like Amish Mafia, formerly known as Espresso Moco, aren't loved enough by someone to be included in the United States Trotting Association's Full Circle Program. According to Janet Terhune, a United States Trotting Association registrar,“It’s cost free, and a great way to ensure that former connections of a horse can have a hand in ensuring a safe, productive outcome for a horse that is no longer commercially viable." Moco was rescued after becoming a discarded Amish road horse. He is a gorgeous 14 years old Standardbred gelding who is currently in training and will become available for adoption in the near future.

Flag Dale Road

(Dale)

Gender: Gelding

Year Foaled: 2004

Breed: Standardbred

Height:15.2hh

Status:currently unavailable

He is here. He is safe. The only thing that allows us to post this heartbreaking photo is that in several months, with good care and good food this poor gelding will look like a completely different horse. Dale, rescued from the kill pen, is a Trotter who has been trained to drive .  Horses like Dale, often require special care to recover.  Please consider a donation to help Dale heal. Thank you!

Update: Flag Dale Road is shown here in the summer of 2016 a few months after rescue from the kill pen. It didn't take this fella long to put on weight once he was given good pasture and a well deserved rest.

Blush Seelster (Blush)

Gender: Mare

Year Foaled: 1994

Breed: Standardbred

Height:15hh

Status:currently unavailable

Welcome Blush! Blush is a Pacer who raced from 1996-2001 and is said to have won over $44,000.00. We don't know what her life was like from 2001 until she found herself in the kill pen at New Holland. We do know that from now on she will be cared for and loved as a sanctuary horse with Racer Placers or rehabilitated and adopted.

Update: Blush continues to gain weight and has also found a friend (Win-n-Grin/Mr. Personality) to lean on!  She has been enjoying sunny, green pastures and recuperating nicely since being rescued from the kill pens to the east.

Dahlia

Gender: Mare
Year Foaled: 1996
Breed: Standardbred
Size: 15hh
Sanctuary Horse

We know this older mare is a Standardbred but can't identify her by the unreadable lip tattoo. Rescued from the kill pens to the east, she will now have the opportunity to enjoy the warm sunshine and green pastures. We promise more photos as this beautiful flower we call Dahlia, blossoms. She is currently a sanctuary horse and is not available for adoption. Please remember donations are always appreciated to help us care for our horses. Visit our donation page and help if you can. Thank you!

Meet Me There (Whisper)

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 2012
Breed: Standardbred
Size: 15hh

Meet Me There, aka Whisper, is now ready to begin some saddle training. He is a stunning gelding, very dark bay with three white feet. He is already harness trained, and loves people and attention.  Last summer he made his living babysitting a weanling!

Update: Whisper, aka Meet Me There, has been in training at Double Lane Horsemanship in West Bend. He is coming along nicely and ready to be adopted and finished your way!

Kaydon Begone

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 2005
Breed: Standardbred
Size: 14.2hh

Kaydon Begone is a sweet gelding whose racing career has ended. Kaydon has the most amazing ears, which swivel way around when he wants to hear behind him.  He is a quiet driving horse, and will soon begin saddle training.

Skippy

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 2004
Breed: Standardbred
Size: 15hh

Skippy made his way to rescue! His teeth say he is about 12 years old and was represented as a Standardbred at the kill pen in New Holland. He was an Amish road horse, and came to us thin with heavy road shoes. We quickly discovered that he has heaves, but as you know, he will be more bothered at some times than other times. Right now he is doing very well. He has been here since December, and he has gained a lot of weight. He is as sweet as they come, and will ride and drive when he is able!

Norfolk Pine (Rip)

Gender: Gelding
Year Foaled: 1999
Breed: Standardbred
Size: 17hh

This is Norfolk Pine/Rip and LeAnn Kissner of Acclaim performance Horses in Jefferson, Wi. at our Driving Fun Day.   After his racing career ended, Norfolk Pine spent many years as a “road horse” carrying a Pennsylvania family to town and church.  When he could no longer hold his weight while working so hard, he was sent to a sale where he ended up in the “kill pen”.   Saved from slaughter by Nancy Shaffer and sent to Wisconsin to Racer Placers, he arrived thin and weak.   Now, after more than a year at Acclaim, he is  healthy, in good flesh and ready for a new home.   He does a very nice singlefoot gait under saddle and his ground manners are excellent.  On May 14th, he will be 18 years old.

Dashing Victory

Gender: Mare
Year Foaled: 2003
Height: 15hh
Breed: Standardbred

"Dash" is a new arrival at Racer Placers.  She was rescued from a kill pen in New Jersey along with her friend, Summerhill Sam, and arrived at Racer Placers in August of 2015.  Both horses are gaining weight and are currently in a foster home while we assess their health and previous training.

Update: Dash is enjoying life in her foster home. She is a friendly horse who is harness trained and can be ridden.

Abigail

Gender: Mare
Breed: Standardbred
Sanctuary Horse/Pasture Pal

Abigail is a very special little Standrardbred filly. Born without one eye and a possible cataract on the other, she faces many challenges. She stayed with her mother until she was 5 months old and then they both traveled to Racers Placers. When she was settled in, her mother returned home and Abigail began her new life with us. She has had a thorough examination with an ophthalmologist and neurologist at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in Madison and we believe she has the potential to lead a happy, productive life with proper care and guidance. She is trusting and inquisitive and currently learning voice commands. She is currently not available for adoption as we continue her training.

Update: Abigail is a confident, friendly horse who, despite her impaired vision, enjoys learning new things and is curious and confident. She stands nicely for the farrier, loads well and has good ground manners. She lives with a donkey, a pony and several horses and gets along with everyone.

Incredible Brando

Gender: Gelding
Date foaled: 2004
Height: 15.1hh
Breed: Standardbred
Sanctuary Horse/Pasture Pal

Brando is a bright bay gelding looking for a job as a friend and companion to another equine. He is always interested in all that goes on around him.  His star with a connecting strip makes him easy to spot in our herd of mostly solid colored horses!

Master Blend

Gender: Gelding
Date foaled: 2001
Height: 15.3hh
Breed: Standardbred

Please welcome Master Blend (we call him Murray) to the training program! Murray is Beautiful Blend's brother and Wild Blend's son. He has just begun his training (this is his second ride in the photo) and like most of the Standardbreds we have encountered, he picks things up very quickly.  A nice sturdy horse who has a great future ahead of him.   Murray is Beautiful Blend's brother. More updates as his training continues!

Amelia

Gender: Mare
Year Foaled: 2004
Height: 16hh
Breed: Standardbred

ADOPTION PENDING

Amelia is currently being started at Double Lane Horsemanship LLC. With limited time and lack of previous handling, she is doing really well. She has about four rides on her so far and will start some trail riding soon. She isn't spooky and is a big, solid mare with a sweet personality. A trotter with a nice gait, she will make someone a great trail horse once she gets a few more miles on her. Amelia, like most of the other Standardbreds we have worked with, stands great for the vet and farrier and trailers well.

Update 8-20-14: Amelia is having all kinds of fun at Double Lane Horsemanship in West Bend!  This horse is a trotter who also gaits.  She is experiencing lots of new things and taking it all in stride.  She is ready to enjoy the fall colors on a trail ride!

Still growing, Angel was considered too small to race. She is very quiet and sweet. Angel has begun groundwork training.

Peter Jackson of Wakefield Pottery in Cambridge WI is a monthly sponsor for Bluebird Angel.

Raven

Gender: Mare
